Profile

Rui Mateus Amaral is the Adjunct Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto. In addition to this new role, Mateus Amaral is Director and Curator of Scrap Metal, a privately owned, not-for-profit exhibition space also in Toronto. Mateus Amaral has curated a number of exhibitions, some of which include solo presentations by Eric N. Mack, Vajiko Chachkiani, Hudinilson Jr., Iris Häussler, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Paul P., Ryan Gander and Eva Kot’átková. Many of these projects were the artists' first in Canada. He has consulted on a wide-range of curatorial projects for organizations that include the Royal Ontario Museum, Canadian Art Foundation and Art Toronto. His writing has appeared in the publications Art Forum and Momus, as well as artist publications for Ryan Gander, Jimmy Limit, Iris Häussler and Eva Kot’átková. Mateus Amaral holds an MFA in Criticism and Curatorial Studies from OCAD University, Toronto, as well as a professional diploma from Randolph College for the Performing Arts, Toronto.
